Ileostomy
Surgical procedure to create an opening (stoma) in the abdominal wall to allow waste to leave the body directly from the small intestine, bypassing the colon, rectum and anus.
Colonoscopy
A screening procedure to examine the inner lining of the large bowel (colon) and rectum, especially in people over the age of 50 or with a family history of bowel cancer.
Colectomy
Procedure to remove part or all of the colon (large bowel). Carried out to treat conditions such as bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diverticulitis and bowel obstruction.
Appendectomy
Removal of the appendix, an operation usually performed as an emergency procedure when the appendix becomes inflamed and infected, a condition known as appendicitis.
