Cystitis

A type of bacterial infection of the urinary tract (UTI) that can cause pain, urgency and discomfort. It is more common in women, but can also affect men and children.

What Is Cystitis?

Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder, most commonly caused by a bacterial infection. It is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that can cause pain, urgency to urinate, and discomfort. While cystitis is more common in women, it can also affect men and children. In some cases, non-infectious cystitis can occur due to irritants, medications, or underlying conditions like interstitial cystitis.

How Is Cystitis Treated?

The treatment for cystitis depends on its cause:

  • Bacterial Cystitis: Treated with antibiotics, usually for 3-7 days.
  • Interstitial Cystitis: Managed with medications, bladder training, and lifestyle changes.
  • Non-Infectious Cystitis: Treated by avoiding irritants such as certain personal care products, medications, or foods.

Doctors may also recommend increased fluid intake, urinary pain relievers, and probiotics to help manage symptoms and prevent recurrence.

What to Expect During Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Diagnosis: Includes urinalysis, urine culture, and sometimes cystoscopy to examine the bladder.
  • Treatment Duration: Mild cases improve within a few days with antibiotics, while chronic or interstitial cystitis may require long-term management.
  • Prevention: Includes staying hydrated, urinating after intercourse, and avoiding bladder irritants like caffeine and alcohol.

The Importance of Cystitis Treatment in Healthcare

Untreated cystitis can lead to kidney infections and serious complications. Early diagnosis and proper treatment reduce discomfort and prevent recurrent infections, improving the patient’s overall quality of life.
