Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Fertility treatment that places sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization. Commonly used for couples with infertility issues.

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into the uterus during ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization. IUI is commonly used for couples facing infertility due to male factor infertility, cervical issues, or unexplained infertility. The procedure is minimally invasive and often performed alongside ovulation-inducing medications to enhance the chances of success.

How is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Performed?

  1. Ovarian Stimulation: The woman may be prescribed fertility medications to stimulate ovulation and increase the number of eggs produced.
  2. Monitoring Ovulation: Through blood tests and ultrasounds, the healthcare provider monitors the timing of ovulation.
  3. Sperm Collection: The male partner provides a sperm sample, which is then processed in the laboratory to concentrate the healthiest sperm.
  4. Sperm Insertion: The processed sperm is injected directly into the uterus using a thin catheter, timed to coincide with the woman's ovulation.
  5. Pregnancy Test: After about two weeks, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the procedure was successful.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

  • Before IUI: You may undergo blood tests and ultrasounds to assess your fertility. Ovulation-stimulating medications may be prescribed.
  • During IUI: The procedure itself is quick and usually painless. A thin catheter is used to insert sperm into the uterus. It is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure.
  • After IUI: You will be asked to rest briefly before leaving the clinic. A pregnancy test will be done after two weeks to confirm the success of the procedure.

The Importance of IUI in Healthcare

IUI is a widely used and less invasive fertility treatment that helps increase the chances of conception for couples facing infertility challenges. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with male infertility, cervical mucus issues, or unexplained infertility. By placing sperm directly in the uterus at the right time, IUI enhances the likelihood of fertilization, offering an accessible and effective option for many couples.
