Quirónsalud, Spain's and Europe's leading hospital group, is at the forefront of oncology, having constructed Spain's first Proton Therapy Centre. This is another significant step in its commitment to innovation, safety and patient care.
Due to the physical properties of protons, proton therapy is currently the safest and most advanced radiotherapy technique for treating certain types of cancer. When administered in specific doses, protons can act with precision within tissues, achieving greater anti-tumour activity while causing less damage to healthy tissue. For this reason, this therapy is recommended for paediatric patients and certain types of tumours.
This new centre brings together all the technology required for tumour treatment in a single, multifunctional room. The Proteus One® proton therapy system incorporates a tumour scanning system to help doctors deliver the most appropriate dose to each treatment area. It boasts the most advanced imaging equipment and can rotate 220 degrees around the patient, enabling the proton beam to be applied from any angle.
Proton therapy offers many benefits, including minimal or no radiation around the tumour, a lower total radiation dose per treatment, a significantly reduced risk of secondary tumours and an improved quality of life for patients.
